COMPUTER GAME AND SIMULATION PROGRAMMING

 

This event recognizes PBL members who demonstrate skill in designing a functional interactive simulation/game that will both entertain and educate/inform the player.

Entries may be created by an individual or team of no more than three members.  No more than one team member may have entered this event at a previous National Leadership Conference or placed 1st or 2nd in this event at a previous State Leadership Conference.  Students competing in this event on the state level must be registered for the conference or the entry will not be judged.
 

ELIGIBILITY
 

Participants must have paid state and national dues postmarked by February 15 of the current school year.

 

Participants must not be or have been enrolled in any graduate program prior to December 1 of the current school year.

 

State:            Each charter may enter one participant/team in this event.

REGULATIONS

State:           When it has been determined that a student will represent the charter at state competition, the appropriate entry form must be sent to the state adviser postmarked first-class mail by the date specified in the SLC registration packet.

NOTE:  At the national level this event has a presentation portion.  Be sure  to read national guidelines if preparing for national competition.

 

• The participant may choose any programming language or game/animation engine to create a stand alone executable program that will display creativity, programming skill, and convey the message of the topic.

 

• One DVD or USB thumb drive containing the executable object, data or support file(s) needed to run the executable file and a readme file must be postmarked to the state office by the date specified in the State Leadership Conference registration packet along with a Statement of Assurance.

 

• The program must contain minimally the following:


1. Minimum of five missions/tasks/levels to be completed before winning or completing the game.
2. Must be graphical in nature, not text based.
3. An initial title page with the game title, user interface control instructions, and active button for Play and Quit.
4. A quit command programmed to the escape key.  This is needed if the player wants to end the game before completing.
 

 

 

• The DVD or USB thumb drive must be labeled with the school, participant name, state and event.

 

• All data and programs should be contained in a master folder named STATE_SCHOOL where your state and school are listed in that folder name format.  Outside of the master folder, create a shortcut to the executable.  If the program requires a runtime player, create a shortcut outside the master folder to launch the runtime player installer.

 

• Program must run on Windows XP or higher computer including Vista.

 

• Data must be free of viruses/malware.  Any entry with contaminated data will not be judged.

 

• Program produced must be prepared by the participant without help.
 

JUDGING
 

Programs will be judged by a panel of judges prior to the State Leadership Conference.  All judges’ decisions are final.

 

AWARDS

 

State:           State awards for the top five places are presented at the State Leadership Conference.

 

National:     The number of awards presented at the National Leadership Conference is determined by judges and/or number of entries.  The maximum number will be ten.
